2011 census: UK harmonisation

We work closely with other census offices across the UK.

The census in England and Wales is run by the Office for National Statistics. The census in Northern Ireland is run by the Northern Ireland Statistics Research Agency.

Each country pledged to:

  • conduct the census on the same day
  • provide census results that can be compared
  • apply the standards set out in the 2011 Census Quality Strategy

This is called UK harmonisation.

See census what census data is available for the whole UK.
