Scottish Census releases new research samples
National Records of Scotland has released new anonymised samples of data from Scotland's Census 2022, giving researchers, students and educators greater access to detailed population data for analysis and teaching.
Two sample sizes of the Scottish population are available now:
- A 1% sample for teaching subjects like statistics and geography in schools, colleges and universities
- A 5% sample for registered researchers who need to analyse individual records
A 10% sample for more detailed research in a secure environment will become available in the coming weeks.
These samples contain anonymised individual records rather than summary tables. This enables advanced statistical analysis and the study of complex population groups.
All census data remains anonymised and protected by layers of security. Names, addresses and dates of birth are all removed. Further steps ensure no individual is identifiable. To use the 5% sample, researchers must sign an end user agreement. Access to the 10% sample requires formal accreditation and secure environment access.
