Census overview

Scotland’s Census is a landmark event.

It happens every 10 years and plays a crucial role in counting the population, as well as sharing information that helps the Government plan the country’s future. Scotland’s Census Day is on 20 March 2022 and every household in the country is being asked to fill theirs in, either on this day, or throughout the entire month.

Speak Census

To help support the census and its teaching in schools, we’ve created Speak Census.

Speak Census is a collection of specially designed educational materials that’ll help you inspire your pupils to learn about Scotland’s Census, so they can speak to their family, friends, carers and those they live with about Scotland’s Census Day.

You’ll find all the links to the downloadable materials throughout this toolkit, as well as a census background and links to further
information.

Case study video clips

We’ve created three case study videos for you to show your class when learning about
the census. They each look at projects heavily influenced by census data from 2011, and
show how the country can change for the better by using this information. The order they are listed is the order we suggest you watch them in.
