Protecting your data

We understand that people need to be confident their personal information will be held securely, so we protect it with strict security measures. Access to personal census information is tightly controlled and we keep the number of people who see census information to a minimum. All National Records of Scotland (NRS) staff who have access to personal census information have had security clearance checks.

We have our own security team, which applies UK government security standards to all areas of the census operation. We regularly review our security measures and improve them when necessary.

An Independent Review Team scrutinised the census arrangements to protect the information provided by the public for more than two years. In their first report they reviewed the arrangements up to February 2011. Their final report covered the period from the initial report to the end of May 2012. The first and final reports from the external Independent Review team were commissioned for all three UK Census Offices. We also commissioned security experts Logica to carry out an Independent Security Review of the security arrangements in place for the 2011 Scottish Census.
