28.03.2011 Scotland’s Census counts the country’s newest arrivals
Babies born on or before Sunday 27 March are counted in Scotland’s biggest population survey – the 2011 Census – which took place yesterday.
One of the youngest to be counted on one of the country’s 2.5 million household questionnaires is Callum Stewart born at 5am at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh to proud parents Jill and David and sisters Morven aged five and Imogen who is nearly two. The family is from East Linton.
There were 134 babies born on census day 10 years ago.
The Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan Macniven, is responsible for organising the census.
He said: “We ask people to show who was part of their household on 27 March but we realise that people like Jill and David will need a little longer to fill in the questionnaire, to include the new member of the family.
”Even if your baby hasn’t been named yet it is important that he or she is counted. Understanding how many babies there are and combining it with other census statistics like the languages families speak and the types of housing or transport that they have access to helps to allocate resources to future services.”
People who have not yet returned their census questionnaire should do so within the next few days. Anyone who hasn’t yet received their census questionnaire can request one from the website or helpline on 0300 124 1702.
