26.03.2009 Hearts and Hibs in Support for Scotland's Census
Two Edinburgh football clubs have teamed up to support Scotland’s census rehearsal which takes place in the city on Sunday (29 March).
The rehearsal aims to test the arrangements for Scotland’s next census, in 2011, including the option to complete questionnaires online for the first time.
The census rehearsal kicked off with around 90 enumerators (census takers) distributing questionnaires to 40,000 households, stretching from Haymarket and Viewforth to the airport and Riccarton.
Robbie Neilson, Heart of Midlothian Football Club captain said:
“The census will give a good picture of the living conditions in Scotland. The census helps with planning for things like leisure facilities, schools and hospitals. The rehearsal that’s taking place in west Edinburgh helps make sure everything is ready for 2011, so make sure you take part and fill your questionnaire in to help build Edinburgh’s future.”
Ian Murray, Hibernian Football Club, Midfielder, said:
“Census information is a vital record of Scottish history, as well as helping the Scottish Government and local councils plan for the future. I would encourage everyone to take part in the rehearsal this month.”
David Stevenson, Census Regional Manager, said:
“Our goal is to deliver a quality Scotland-wide census in 2011 and we hope that as many west Edinburgh people as possible will complete their census rehearsal questionnaires on, or as soon as possible after, Sunday (29 March). It will help us to check that people understand the questions and that our arrangements to deliver and process the questionnaires work ahead of the Scotland-wide census in 2011.”
The rehearsal - which also involves around 10,000 households in Lewis and Harris - will help GROS to identify any necessary refinements to its arrangements for Gaelic speakers, people living in urban and rural areas and those in places such as hospitals, student accommodation and care homes.
Rehearsal questionnaire responses will be treated confidentially, just like the census itself.
