The Census in Schools project uses published census statistics and historic records to support teaching and learning for Primary Six to Secondary One pupils in several areas of the school curriculum.
Janet Dickson - a teacher from Glenwood High School in Glenrothes - has joined the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) on a part-time basis to develop the project, which has an emphasis on core skills, citizenship and links with communities.
Ms Dickson said:
“The Census in School’s project aims to encourage schools to learn about the national census and to make use of census material. It will give pupils an opportunity to investigate their own communities, past and present, and find out how census information will be used in the future. The project includes lots of interactive activities and work shops for the pupils to enjoy.
“Several schools in west Edinburgh and Lewis and Harris helped to successfully pilot the project as part of Scotland’s Census Rehearsal earlier this year and I look forward to developing the project further ahead of the next census in 2011.”
Census in Schools will be available on GLOW, the national schools intranet, from 2010. It is a partnership between Learning Teaching Scotland, GROS, the National Archives of Scotland and local authorities.
