Why this question is asked

An important function of the census is to collect information on the economic activity status of all people aged 16 and over in the United Kingdom. This includes some information on whether a person has ever worked.

Write in the year you last worked in the format yyyy.

If you can't remember the year you last worked, please estimate it as best you can.

If you tick ‘No’, we do not need to ask you questions about your job. Please go to question 38.

This question gathers information on paid employment. If you have only ever worked unpaid or voluntarily please select “No, I have never worked'. However, if you have worked unpaid for your own or family's business please select 'Yes' and enter the year.
