Question H13How are the members of this household related to each other?

H13a

How to answer

Tick a box to show the relationship of each person to each of the other people who usually live here. Remember to include household members who are filling in an Individual Questionnaire.

Use the same order you used in question H3 – you may find it helpful to write in the name(s) of the household member(s) in the space provided. Remember to include children and babies.

If there are more than 5 people in your household, contact the Helpline on 0300 123 1702 to ask for a Continuation Questionnaire.

Why this question is asked

This information will provide statistics of households analysed by family composition, for example on how many families there are and what changes in family size have been taking place. Uses made of the information gathered from this question include planning of accommodation and support services for elderly people and the assessment of the potential demand for housing from young families and multi-family households.

Help with answering

If two or more people who usually live here are unrelated, select 'Unrelated (including foster child)'.

If you have an adopted child, please include them in the 'Son or daughter' category.

If you have a foster child, please include them in the 'Unrelated (including foster children)' category.

More questions?

I live alone, do I need to answer this question?
No, if you live alone you do not need to answer this question.

How do I record half-brothers or half-sisters?
Please include half-brothers and half-sisters in the ‘Step-brother or step-sister’ category.

What do you mean by ‘same-sex civil-partner’?
Same-sex civil-partner is used to describe the relationship between two people of the same-sex who have registered a civil partnership. A civil partnership gives same-sex couples similar rights and responsibilities to a marriage. Only same-sex couples can enter into a civil partnership.

We live together as a same-sex couple but we are not in a civil partnership. Which option should I select?
Please select ‘Partner’.

I'm filling in this question online and have more than 5 people in my household. Why do you not ask about the relationships between every household member for person 6 onwards?
We don't need to ask this as we can infer the relationships between each member of the household based on previous answers. This also makes it consistent with the paper questionnaire. Please answer the question as it appears on the screen.
