Top 1. When can I contact the Helpline?

The Helpline will close on Wednesday 29th June.

After this date, please telephone the General Register Office for Scotland switchboard on:

0131 334 0380

The switchboard is open from:

8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and
8.30am to 4.30pm on Friday.

Top 2. English isn't my first language - what support is available?

The census questionnaire must be filled in English (or in Gaelic online).

To help you fill in the questionnaire in English, translations of the census questions are available in the following languages:

Arabic
Bengali
Cantonese
Farsi
Tagalog
French
Hindi
Polish
Punjabi
Turkish
Urdu

These can be downloaded from the translation section of this site, a paper version can be requested from the census Helpline or textphone to arrange a three-way conversation with an interpreter.

Top 3. I am blind or visually impaired, how can I fill in my questionnaire?

You can fill in the questionnaire online as this website has been designed to conform to usability and accessibility standards.

You can also listen to the questions in our help and support section of this site.

Alternatively, we can provide you with a large-print questionnaire or census guidance and questions in braille which can be requested from the census Helpline or textphone.

Top 4. I am deaf or have a hearing impairment, what assistance is available to me?

The questions have been translated into British Sign Language (BSL) and video clips are available on this site. These clips can be viewed either when filling in the questionnaire online or as an aid when completing your paper questionnaire. You can contact us through our textphone service.

Top 5. Can the census taker (enumerator) come into my home to help me fill in the questionnaire?

Your census taker (enumerator) will try to help you on the doorstep. However, an arrangement can be made for your census taker to return with a colleague if you decide further help is necessary.
